who we are | board | staff | contact us Founded in 1981, the Fund for Southern Communities (FSC) is comprised of concerned individuals working in partnership to provide financial support and technical assistance to community organizations working for social and economic justice. Dependent primarily upon contributions from individuals, for financial support, FSC is committed to making a meaningful difference in the world through social change. FSC has given more than $4 million to over 1,500 grant recipients in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Through its fundraising and grant making programs, FSC has created a responsible and effective link between individuals desiring to fund progressive endeavors and groups and organizations that are working for progressive social change. The Fund for Southern Communities provides financial resources to help move people from thought to action. FSC supports small community groups working for environmental justice, women's rights, youth development, lesbian and gay rights, worker's rights, civil rights and disability rights. FSC awards approximately 40-60 grants per year, ranging in amounts from $1,000 to $5,000. Grantees not only benefit from financial assistance, they are also given assistance in organizational development, fund-raising, and financial management. Rather than just treating the symptoms of our social ills, the Fund for Southern Communities seeks long-term solutions by putting resources into the hands of the frontline community leaders who are working to solve these problems from the ground up. FSC is unusual in that it awards grants to community organizations that are working to address the systems and structures that cause community problems. Often these organizations and projects are overlooked by traditional charities and private foundations because their projects are too new, the organization is too small, or their objectives are too controversial. FSC is willing to make grants to these unique groups and organizations because we believe that communities that have the resources to work on their own behalf make change happen. The Fund for Southern Communities is a stable, credible resource through which donors can support causes and organizations that are meaningful to them and making a difference in their communities.
