People of Hope, GA www.peopleofhope.us

General support to build Georgia's first resident-controlled, permanently affordable, manufactured housing community for low-income families, providing them with an opportunity to build wealth as the houses increase in equity and move away from poverty. The cooperative-owned manufactured housing model stabilizes their community by ensuring that the land would never again be sold from underneath their homes, provides them control over their own community, empowers their families and gives them the opportunity to overcome poverty.

 

Disability Resource Group, GA www.gaada.info

Project support for the Building Rural Advocacy In Georgia project which will empower people with disabilities in rural Georgia to find resources, educate others regarding their abilities and civil rights and empower and info m other people with disabilities in their communities to the same end. Disability Resource Group works to bring about full inclusion for all Georgians with disabilities in every aspect of community life.

 

Triangle CAN (Formerly Metro Durham Sponsors), NC www.durhamcan.org

Project support to advance and champion three campaigns in Orange County, NC, in the areas of living wage, environment and affordable housing for low income families. The primary purpose of their proposal is to strengthen the safety net for low-income people in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, NC, and have the goal of generating changes in some of the structures that perpetuate poverty in the area.

 

Pee Dee Indian Nation of Upper South Carolina, SC www.pdndn.org

Project support to test the water in local streams, creeks and wells for contamination and to fight for alternate methods of disposing of animal waste and to keep hog factory farms with open waste lagoons out of Dillon County and keep the water safe. The tests will show the level of dangerous chemical and bacteria in the water, which will in turn bolster their argument with the Dillon County Counsel, Department of Health and Human Services, as well as state legislators, as they request changes in the law relating to animal waste disposal and storage.

 

Hispanic Health Coalition of Georgia, GA www.hhcga.org

General support to promote health and social change in Latino/Hispanic communities by connecting individuals and organizations and by providing leadership and advocacy on health issues affecting the Latino community. Through their three (3) committees (Advocacy, Projects and Organizational Development), HHCGA advocates, educates and provides leadership for Hispanic health needs guided by their mission.

 

Coalición de Organizaciones Latino-Americanas, NC www.colawnc.org

General support to connect and strengthen organizations that empower Latino communities in Western North Carolina, educate people about immigrants' rights and realities and build collective power among Latinos organizations. As a regional network, COLA works with over 20 Latino-led or Latino-serving organizations brining people together; influencing decision-makers on social, economic and racial justice issues facing Latinos and other marginalized communities; and providing Know Your Rights workshops and other trainings.

General support for the Living Wage Employer Certification Program and Voices for Economic Justice Leadership Development Program for low-wage workers to build a strong, local movement for economic justice led by low-wage workers and their allies, addressing the root cause of poverty and change the balance of power in the community. Just Economics works to educate, advocate and organize for more just and equitable economic conditions, increased union representation, and a fair share for all in the prosperity of their region regardless of race, gender or citizenship status.

Support for a Community Media Collaboration campaign that intends to see South Carolina's state-owned educational broadcasting system used to create a statewide free wireless internet service; South Carolina is the only state whose educational broadcast system is funded by taxpayers and entirely owned by the state.

 

The Peoples Channel, NC www.thepeopleschannel.org

Support for a Community Media Collaboration campaign working to access a channel for public access programming and create a business plan for a Community Media Center, creating enough political pressure and community buy-in for the project through grassroots organizing. Funds would also support a temporary organizer/fundraiser and other overhead expenses.

Support for a Media Justice Toolkit which will consist of a series of four television programs to be aired on local public access state educating people on how to organize and support locally-controlled, progressive media sources, which will transform citizens into video activists and that will empower citizens to launch campaigns promoting change to federal communications policy.

Support for a Media Justice Toolkit called See the Media, Be the Media, through which they will create and execute a series of participatory workshops for four communities in North Carolina and South Carolina to introduce tools to identify and dissect issue-framing and bias in media coverage; to explain the media justice framework and how media policy and ownership impact community access to media, and the issues of accountability that stem from consolidation and lack of diversity in ownership; to introduce tools for addressing hostile media portrayals; a discussion of the creating and distributing community-created media; and an exercise to map the corporate and local media infrastructure in the region.
