Fiscal Year 2007-2008 Grant-making Initiatives

MEDIA JUSTICE

GALEO Latino Community Development Fund, GA (www.galeo.org)

GALEO is creating a web portal that will be used to empower the Immigrant Rights Movement to achieve better coordination, strategy and provide a forum for immigrants to tell their stories. This central portal can be used for organizers, activists and community members to not only share news and information but to share their own stories, films, photos, challenges and successes. Today, many people rely on the internet for their political information. According to GALEO, 46% of all Internet traffic is web traffic, or people visiting websites. As the Civil Rights movement relied on flyers, meetings and phone calls, today's movements can be fueled by the technology that is available; and GALEO's web portal allows for a more participatory movement. People across the nation are documenting their own stories; however, the information is scattered and needs to be consolidated into a central location. The information compiled can serve as a point of contact for academics, journalists and community members alike. Further, the portal is a space for immigrants to tell their own stories and begin to challenge media portrayals of immigrants.
