Please note that
these dates are a month earlier than previous years. The complete proposal must be in the FSC
office no later than 5:00 p.m. on deadline date. Late or incomplete
proposals will not be considered for funding.
The
Fund for Southern Communities is a publicly supported foundation established
in 1981 to provide grants and technical assistance to progressive grassroots
social change organizations working in North Carolina, South Carolina,
and Georgia. The Fund invites applications from organizations:
- fighting
discrimination based on race, sex, age, religion, economic status,
sexual orientation, ethnic background, or physical and mental disabilities;
- struggling
for the rights of workers;
- promoting self-determination
in low-income and disenfranchised communities;
- protecting
the environment;
- promoting and/or
creating non-traditional arts and media;
- promoting peace.

The
Fund for Southern Communities is composed of a membership of concerned
individuals whose commitment of time, money, and expertise has contributed
to the Fund's development. These members have agreed that the Fund will:
- support projects
working for an equitable distribution of economic and political
power
- support projects
that are unlikely to be funded by traditional funding sources.
- support projects
in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
- support direct
services only when tied to social change programs or when likely
to empower the communities served.
- make grants
not exceeding $5,000. (Most grants will range from $1,000 to
$5,000,
with an approximate average grant size of $3,000.)
In
addition to the General Fund, grants are awarded from several field
of interest affiliate and donor advised funds. There is no separate
application procedure for any of these funds. Submitting the NNG Common
Grant Application form will enable groups to receive funding from any
of the funds for which they may be eligible. Please call the office
with any questions prior to submitting a proposal.
Other
funds from which grants may be made include:
Grassroots
Fund: providing grants in the eleven county Triangle Region of NC
Modjeska Simkins Fund: funds civil rights, youth, racial justice,
low-income community organizing and women's issues in SC
Southern Outlook Fund: supports lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender
organizing
Racial Justice Fund: supports organizing to counter racial discrimination
Organizational Development Fund: supports training assistance
for grantee groups
Emergency Fund: provides quick responses to requests that can
not fit into normal grantmaking timelines. back
