What is the Census?

The United States Census is a constitutional requirement that calls for an “actual enumeration” of every person in the country every ten years. The census, in short, is a headcount of how many people live in America. Note, that the requirement is NOT to count citizens, but people. If you are living in the United States, then you are counted. This count has been conducted every ten years since 1790 and the next is scheduled for 2020.

Why is it important?

In addition to providing the number of people living in the United States, the Census also determines the number of congressional seats and Electoral College votes given to each state. For example, a lower population count in the 2000 Census caused Mississippi to lose an electoral vote, reducing the number from seven to six.

PLAN TO BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS 2020!

In addition to electoral votes, the population numbers revealed by the Census will determine how over $800 billion dollars of federal funding is spent for schools, roads, public services, and more.

What can you expect?

The 2020 Census will officially started on January 21, 2020 in Alaska, with most households around the nation beginning to participate in March. However, Census Day, which is April 1, 2020 is generally considered the start of the Census period. During this time, letters with instructions will be sent to 95% of all homes across the country.
The instructions will explain how households can complete their surveys online or by use of a 1-800 number to answer questions by phone. For those living in extremely remote areas, Census workers will make an in-person visit to homes. Those homes that have received letters, but do not respond either online or by phone or have submitted incomplete answers may also be visited by Census workers.

Deadline to complete the Census online is July 31st, 2020
